Franz Peter Schubert was an Austrian composer of the late Classical and early Romantic eras, born 31 January 1797 in Vienna and died there on 19 November 1828 at the age of 31. Despite his short life and a career spent largely outside institutional posts, he was immensely prolific, composing more than 1,000 works including over 600 Lieder, seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music, and a substantial body of piano and chamber music, much of it unpublished or unperformed in his lifetime.
Schubert established the German Lied as a major art form, wedding poetry to music with unprecedented psychological and harmonic depth in cycles such as Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise. His late instrumental works, including the ‘Great’ C major Symphony and the last three piano sonatas, bridge Classical form and Romantic lyricism, and his melodic gift and harmonic daring profoundly influenced composers from Schumann and Brahms to Liszt, who transcribed dozens of his songs for piano.
