Life
Nigel North was born on 5 June 1954 and is an English lutenist, musicologist, and pedagogue. Largely self-taught on the lute after studying guitar at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, he later trained at the Royal College of Music and briefly with Diana Poulton. Appointed Professor of Lute at the Guildhall at just twenty-one, he went on to teach in Berlin, and since 1999 has been Professor of Lute at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. He wrote the standard textbook on continuo playing for lute, archlute, and theorbo, and is celebrated for his complete recordings of Bach’s works transcribed for lute and of Dowland’s solo lute music.
Impact
Nigel North’s authoritative recordings of Bach’s violin and cello works transcribed for lute, alongside his complete Dowland cycle, have become reference points for performers worldwide. As author of the standard textbook on continuo realization, he shaped how a generation of lutenists approach accompaniment, while decades of teaching in London, Berlin, and Indiana have trained many of today’s leading professional lutenists.
