Giulio Caccini was an Italian composer, singer, and teacher born around 1551, probably in Rome, and buried in December 1618 in Florence, remembered as a founding figure of opera and the new monodic style. Brought to Florence as a young singer under Grand Duke Francesco de’ Medici, he became a leading court musician and a central member of the Florentine Camerata, the humanist circle that sought to revive ancient Greek dramatic music. With fellow composer Jacopo Peri he contributed to the earliest operas, including a rival setting of Euridice rushed into print in 1600, and he later codified his expressive solo-song style in the influential collection Le nuove musiche (1602).

Caccini helped invent monody and the basso continuo practice that became the bedrock of Baroque vocal music, moving composition decisively away from Renaissance polyphony toward text-driven solo expression. Le nuove musiche’s preface remains a primary source for understanding early Baroque ornamentation and performance style. Though a divisive figure among his contemporaries, his innovations, alongside those of Peri, directly enabled the birth and rapid spread of opera across Italy and Europe.
