Biography (read more)
Georg Nigl was born in Vienna in 1972 and began his musical life as a member of the Vienna Boys’ Choir, in which he sang solo roles. He went on to study privately with the soprano Hilde Zadek. He made his adult operatic career from the 1990s onwards, appearing at houses including the Bavarian State Opera, the Berlin State Opera, the Theater an der Wien, La Scala and the Salzburg Festival. He is a professor of voice at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart.
Nigl occupies an unusual position between early music and the contemporary stage. He is a noted Monteverdi and Mozart singer, naming Orfeo and Papageno among his favourite roles, and he sang Orfeo in Robert Wilson’s production at La Scala under Rinaldo Alessandrini. At the same time he has created leading roles in new operas, including the title role in Pascal Dusapin’s Faustus, the Last Night at the Berlin State Opera, and has worked closely with composers such as Wolfgang Rihm. He is also active as a Lieder singer, with recordings of the German and Russian song repertoire. His declamatory, text-driven approach has been widely praised.
