David Fray is a French classical pianist born 24 May 1981 in Tarbes. He began studying music at age four and entered the professional concert world after winning the Second Grand Prize at the Montreal International Music Competition in 2004. He studied with Jacques Rouvier, was voted “Newcomer of the Year 2008” by BBC Music Magazine, and his devotion to Bach and eccentric performing manner were the subject of the 2008 ARTE documentary Swing, Sing and Think.

Fray has built an international career centered on Bach, Mozart, and Schubert, recording extensively for Virgin Classics/Erato and performing with conductors including Kurt Masur, Christoph Eschenbach, and Jaap van Zweden. His 2018 album Bach: Concertos for 2, 3 & 4 Pianos reunited him with his former teacher Jacques Rouvier and fellow Rouvier students Emmanuel Christien and Audrey Vigoureux, in what Fray called “a musical family affair.”
