Stéphane Degout (born 9 June 1975 in Bourg-en-Bresse) is a French baritone who grew up in Saint-Jean-de-Niost and has lived in Lyon since 1995. Trained at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon under Margreet Honig, he began his career as a member of the Opéra national de Lyon troupe, making his debut as Papageno in The Magic Flute at the Aix-en-Provence Festival’s Académie européenne de musique in 1998.
Degout has sung a wide-ranging repertoire at leading houses including the Paris Opera, Covent Garden, La Scala, and the Metropolitan Opera, working with conductors such as William Christie, Simon Rattle, and Emmanuelle Haïm, and creating roles in world premieres by composers including Philippe Boesmans and George Benjamin. Named Lyric Artist of the Year at the 2012 Victoires de la Musique Classique, he is especially admired for his interpretations of French mélodie and the Baroque and Classical French operatic repertoire.
