Biography (read more)
Stanislav Genrikhovich Neuhaus (Russian: Станислав Генрихович Нейгауз; Moscow, 21 March 1927 – 24 January 1980) was a Soviet-Russian pianist and teacher, the son of the pianist and pedagogue Heinrich Neuhaus and of Zinaida Yeryomeyeva-Neuhaus. His childhood and youth were spent in the household of his stepfather, the poet Boris Pasternak, whom Melodiya’s 1973 sleeve note credits with a significant influence on the development of his talent and artistic worldview. He took his first musical education at the Gnessin School under V. V. Listova, finished the Moscow Conservatory’s preparatory college in 1944 in the class of V. S. Belov, graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1950 in his father’s class and completed postgraduate study with him in 1953; the Melodiya note dates the start of his concert career to 1949. In his father’s later years he was one of his three teaching assistants, alongside Lev Naumov and Yevgeny Malinin. He himself taught from 1957, and his students included Vladimir Krainev, Elena Richter, Brigitte Engerer and Radu Lupu. He was made an Honoured Artist of the RSFSR in 1966 and a People’s Artist of the RSFSR in 1978, and performed abroad in France, Italy, Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. Among his children were the pianists Heinrich Stanislavovich Neuhaus (1961–2017) and Stanislav Bunin (born 1966). He gave his last recital in Moscow on 18 January 1980 — the four Chopin ballades, the B minor Sonata, the Berceuse and the Barcarolle, with Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninoff and Scriabin encores — and died six days later, aged 52. He is buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow.
Neuhaus inherited his father’s romantic school and gave it a darker cast of his own. Aram Khachaturian, writing in the paper Soviet Musician, called him the best pianist in the Moscow Conservatory, and Melodiya’s own sleeve note describes an art of great artistic temperament, a subtle and diverse sound palette, and phrasing that follows the intonations of the human voice, adding that where Heinrich Neuhaus leaned towards the bright, optimistic side of Chopin, Stanislav was equally close to the dramatic and the tragic-heroic in that same music. Chopin and Scriabin were the two composers most closely identified with him — they account for 63 of the 143 verified recordings gathered here — and a French critic headed a review with the line that Neuhaus owned the best left hand in the world. His influence ran on through his pupils, among them Vladimir Krainev, Brigitte Engerer and Radu Lupu, and through his son Stanislav Bunin; the International Stanislav Neuhaus Piano Competition is named in his honour. Almost everything that survives of his playing is live: the Melodiya and Russian Compact Disc tapes reissued as Art Tracks are concert recordings, including the complete recital of 18 January 1980, six days before his death.
