Gerhard Oppitz was born in 1953 and studied with Paul Buck, Hugo Steurer, and Wilhelm Kempff. In 1977, at age 24, he became the first German pianist to win the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in Tel Aviv, and in 1981 he was appointed professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, the youngest in the institution’s history at the time.
Oppitz is known especially for complete cycles of major piano literature by Schubert, Grieg, Beethoven, Mozart, and Brahms, and has performed as soloist with leading orchestras and conductors worldwide. He received the Brahms-Preis from the Brahms Society of Schleswig-Holstein in 2009 and continues to teach in Munich, having mentored numerous notable students.
