Sergei Prokofiev (1891–1953) was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor regarded as one of the major composers of the 20th century, celebrated for works spanning opera, ballet, symphonic music, and film scores. "Dance of the Knights," from his ballet Romeo and Juliet (1935), is among his best-known orchestral movements, depicting the confrontation between the Montague and Capulet families.

Though written for full orchestra, the movement’s stark rhythmic power has made it a popular target for transcription, including for extended-range instruments such as the ten-string classical guitar.
