Biography (read more)
Garrick Olaf Ohlsson was born in Bronxville, New York, on 3 April 1948 and studied at Juilliard. In 1970 he became the first American gold medallist of the Chopin Competition in Warsaw, after first prizes at Busoni and Montreal; the Avery Fisher Prize followed in 1994, a Grammy in 2008, and Poland’s Gloria Artis medal in 2018.
Ohlsson recorded the complete works of Chopin — one of very few pianists ever to do so — with a physical command that also serves Busoni, Rachmaninoff and Scriabin. His Chopin cycle gives this catalogue something rare: a single, consistent view of the whole œuvre against which every individual reading can be measured.
