Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky was a Russian composer, born 21 March 1839 in Karevo and died 28 March 1881 in Saint Petersburg. A member of the nationalist group of composers known as “The Five,” he sought to forge a distinctly Russian musical idiom, often in deliberate defiance of Western European compositional convention.

His piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition (1874), inspired by an exhibition of paintings by his friend Viktor Hartmann, became one of the most celebrated works of the Russian Romantic repertoire and has been widely transcribed for orchestra and other instruments, including guitar.
