Life
Jadran Duncumb is a baroque lutenist and guitarist of English and Croatian heritage, born in 1991 in Sheffield, England, who grew up near Oslo, Norway, from the age of nine. A finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, he studied guitar under Gary Ryan and lute under Jakob Lindberg at the Royal College of Music in London, then continued at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Trossingen under Rolf Lislevand, graduating with distinction in 2015. That same year he won first prize at the Maurizio Pratola international lute competition in L’Aquila, Italy. Now based near Oslo, Jadran Duncumb is active as both a soloist and a continuo player with numerous European period-instrument ensembles.
Impact
Jadran Duncumb has established himself as one of the most prominent baroque lutenists of his generation, particularly through his acclaimed complete recordings of J.S. Bach’s lute works and Weiss’s sonatas for Audax Records, several of which earned Diapason d’Or awards. His recording of Dowland’s Lachrimae with Accademia Strumentale Italiana further extended his reputation across Renaissance as well as Baroque repertoire. Through frequent continuo and chamber collaborations across Europe, he has helped keep the baroque lute prominent within mainstream period-instrument programming.
