Biography (read more)
Jörg Wolfgang Demus was born in St. Pölten on 2 December 1928, son of the art historian Otto Demus and a concert violinist, and died on 16 April 2019. He entered the Vienna Academy at eleven, and became — with Badura-Skoda and Gulda — one of the leading Austrian pianists of the immediate post-war era, a member of the Legion of Honour among many distinctions.
Demus put his art at the service of others as much as of himself: accompanist of choice to Schwarzkopf and Fischer-Dieskau, duo partner to Badura-Skoda, chamber musician with Josef Suk and Antonio Janigro, and an early champion of the historic fortepiano on the concert platform. His enormous discography of lieder and chamber repertoire is the connective tissue of this catalogue — the same pianist heard behind a dozen different soloists.
