Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Biography (read more)

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was a Russian composer of the Romantic period, born 7 May 1840 in Votkinsk and died 6 November 1893 in St Petersburg. Trained at the newly founded St Petersburg Conservatory, he became the first Russian composer whose music achieved lasting international fame, writing some of the most popular concert and theatrical works in the classical repertoire, including the ballets Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker, the opera Eugene Onegin, and the 1812 Overture. His formal, Western-oriented training set him apart from the nationalist composers of The Five, and he spent his career reconciling that training with a distinctly Russian melodic and emotional sensibility. Despite his popular success, his life was marked by personal crisis and depression, and he died suddenly at 53, officially of cholera.

Tchaikovsky did more than any other 19th-century composer to establish Russian music on the international concert stage, fusing Western symphonic craftsmanship with an intensely personal, melodically driven Russian voice. His ballet scores transformed the genre from decorative accompaniment into fully symphonic drama, and his symphonies, concertos, and chamber works — including the Piano Trio written in memory of his mentor Nikolai Rubinstein — remain pillars of the standard repertoire, prized for their emotional directness and orchestral colour.
