Henning Kraggerud was born on 23 June 1973 in Oslo and studied with Camilla Wicks, Emanuel Hurwitz and Stephan Barratt-Due. He performs on both violin and viola and is also active as a composer, writing arrangements and his own cadenzas. He made his American recital debut at Carnegie Hall in 1998 and has since appeared as a soloist across Europe, Russia and the United States. In 2011 he succeeded Leif Ove Andsnes as co-artistic director of the Risør Festival of Chamber Music, and from 2012 he served as artistic director of the Tromsø Chamber Orchestra. He plays a 1744 Guarneri del Gesù violin.

Kraggerud has become one of the leading advocates for Norwegian violin repertoire, recording works by Grieg, Ole Bull, Halvorsen, Sinding and Svendsen for Naxos. He received Norway’s Grieg Prize and was named Bergen International Festival artist-in-residence in 2004, and his recording of the Ysaÿe solo sonatas won a Spellemannprisen. He frequently appears as a leader-soloist of chamber orchestras, and is noted among colleagues for his improvisatory facility. His festival appearances have included collaborations with Joshua Bell, Leonidas Kavakos and Martha Argerich at Verbier.
