Biography (read more)
Edward Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten (1913–1976) was an English composer, conductor, and pianist, and a central figure of 20th-century British music. His output spans opera, other vocal music, and orchestral and chamber works, including the opera Peter Grimes (1945), the War Requiem (1962), and The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra (1945).
Britten’s only major work for solo guitar, Nocturnal after John Dowland, Op. 70 (1963), written for Julian Bream, is regarded as one of the most significant and demanding pieces in the 20th-century classical guitar repertoire, a set of variations that only reveals its theme — Dowland’s song “Come, Heavy Sleep” — in its final bars.
