Life
Jakob Lindberg was born on 16 October 1952 in Djursholm, Sweden, and is a Swedish lutenist. Inspired first by the Beatles on guitar, he began studying lute as a teenager and later trained at Stockholm University and the Royal College of Music in London, studying with Diana Poulton and guitarist Carlos Bonell. He made his Wigmore Hall solo debut in 1978 and succeeded Poulton as Professor of Lute at the Royal College of Music in 1979. Recording largely for BIS, he produced the first-ever complete recording of John Dowland’s solo lute music and the complete solo lute works of Bach, alongside pioneering discs of previously unrecorded Renaissance repertoire, and founded the Dowland Consort in 1985.
Impact
Jakob Lindberg’s landmark recordings, especially the first complete traversal of Dowland’s solo lute music, opened up previously unheard or under-recorded repertoire to modern listeners and remain touchstones of the discography. His decades as Professor of Lute at the Royal College of Music trained many prominent British lutenists, while his use of historic instruments has advanced understanding of period sound.
