Biography (read more)
Joan Ambrosio Dalza was a Milanese lutenist and composer, active by 1508, the date the source gives as his floruit. He is described as “milanese” in the preface, from which the source says it must be assumed he was either born in Milan, worked there, or both. That publication, Intabolatura de lauto libro quarto, appeared in Venice in 1508 as the fourth volume of Ottaviano Petrucci’s series of lute-music prints.
The pieces that survive comprise 42 dances, nine ricercares, five tastar de corde, four intabulations, and one piece called Caldibi castigliano. Together with the works of Francesco Spinacino and Vincenzo Capirola, this output forms an important part of early Renaissance lute music. The source adds that Dalza’s output, though simpler than that of contemporaries such as Spinacino and Capirola, is important because it is almost entirely original music rather than vocal intabulation.
