Yevgeny Olegovich Sudbin was born on 19 April 1980 in Leningrad and began his training at the music school attached to the Leningrad Conservatory. His family emigrated to Berlin in 1990, where he won several German piano competitions and studied at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler. He moved to the United Kingdom in 1997 and spent nine years as a pupil of Christopher Elton, first at the Purcell School and then at the Royal Academy of Music. He also took lessons with Murray Perahia, Leon Fleisher, Stephen Kovacevich, Dmitri Bashkirov and Stephen Hough, among others. He has lived in Britain since 1997 and holds British citizenship.

Sudbin records exclusively for the Swedish label BIS, where his discography spans Scarlatti, Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Medtner and Scriabin, and his Scarlatti and Medtner discs in particular were widely praised on release. He made his BBC Proms debut in July 2008 and has since appeared with major orchestras in Europe, North America and Asia. In September 2010 he was appointed visiting professor of piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He is also active as an arranger, performing his own piano transcriptions alongside the standard repertoire, and writes the liner notes for many of his own recordings.
