Piotr Beczała was born in 1966 in Czechowice-Dziedzice, Poland, and trained initially in Katowice before further studies in Switzerland with Sena Jurinac. He held early engagements at the Linz State Theatre from 1992 to 1997 and then became a regular member of Zürich Opera, from which base he built an international career with major debuts at leading houses between 2004 and 2006, including the Metropolitan Opera in December 2006 as the Duke in Rigoletto.

Beczała is regarded as one of the leading lyric tenors of his generation, especially admired in Verdi, Mozart, and Wagner roles. His honors include the Munich Opera Festival Prize, an Echo Klassik award, the Fryderyk Artist of the Year award, the International Opera Awards’ Best Singer prize, and a Grammy nomination for his Lohengrin recording; he also holds Poland’s Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Gold Medal for Merit to Culture.
