Biography (read more)
Jerzy Sterczyński was born in 1957. He began playing the piano at six and attended the music high school in Bielsko-Biała, then studied at the Academy of Music in Katowice in the class of Andrzej Jasiński, graduating with honours in 1981. He continued his studies in London with John Bingham.
He took first prize in the young performers competition at the Polish Piano Festival in Słupsk, and in 1983 second prize at the international piano competition in Zaragoza named for Pilar Bayona.
He has been an active concert performer, appearing in Austria, Bulgaria, China, the Czech Republic, France, Spain, South Korea, Kuwait, Germany, Portugal and Italy, and at the Chopin Festival in Duszniki and the festivals of Lockenhaus and La Chaise-Dieu. Since 1989 he has been a professor at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, where he was dean of the department of piano, harpsichord and organ from 2005 to 2008 and was re-elected for the following term.
Chopin is the centre of Sterczyński’s recorded work. He has recorded that composer on thirteen compact discs, taking in the nocturnes, the waltzes, the polonaises and the Second Sonata among other works, which represents one of the more systematic surveys of the repertoire made by a Polish pianist of his generation.
He has also recorded solo works by Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Reger and Szymanowski, concertos, and the solo works and cello sonata of Józef Wieniawski, alongside music by Brahms, Liszt, Dobrzyński and Lessel. Several of these are composers whose piano music is rarely taken up, and the Wieniawski and Dobrzyński recordings in particular serve the wider recovery of nineteenth-century Polish repertoire.
His influence is also institutional: he has taught at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw since 1989 and led its piano, harpsichord and organ department for two terms from 2005.
