George Frideric Handel (23 February 1685 – 14 April 1759) was a German-born composer who settled in London and became a naturalised British subject. A dominant figure of the late Baroque, he is renowned for his Italian operas, English oratorios and orchestral works.

His oratorio Messiah (1741), premiered in Dublin in April 1742, became one of the most frequently performed choral works in Western music, and his operas established the London stage as a major centre of Baroque opera.
