Claude Debussy
Biography (read more)

Achille Claude Debussy was a French composer born 22 August 1862 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye and died 25 March 1918 in Paris. Admitted at age ten to the Conservatoire de Paris, he studied piano before finding his vocation in innovative composition, taking nearly two decades to develop his mature style and achieving international fame at almost 40 with his only completed opera, Pelléas et Mélisande (1902). Though he vigorously rejected the label, he is often regarded as the first Impressionist composer, developing a personal harmonic and orchestral language influenced by Russian and Far Eastern music as well as Chopin and Liszt, and reacting strongly against the German symphonic tradition dominated by Wagner. His output includes the orchestral Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune and La mer, the piano Préludes and Études, and numerous songs setting Symbolist poetry.

Debussy was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, dismantling traditional tonal harmony and symphonic form in favor of colour, atmosphere, and fluid tonal ambiguity. His innovations reshaped the language of Western music and directly influenced composers as varied as Bartók, Stravinsky, Messiaen, Gershwin, and jazz pianist Bill Evans, while piano miniatures such as Clair de lune remain among the most widely performed and arranged works in the entire repertoire.
