Emmanuel Pahud (born 27 January 1970 in Geneva, Switzerland) is a Franco-Swiss flautist. Raised partly in Rome, he began studying flute as a child and trained with flütists including François Binet, Michel Debost, and Aurèle Nicolet at the Conservatoire de Paris, graduating with first prize in 1990. After early orchestral posts in Basel and Munich, he won the audition for principal flute of the Berlin Philharmonic in 1992 at the age of 22, a position he still holds today. He signed an exclusive recording contract with EMI Classics (now Warner Classics) in 1996, launching a parallel solo and chamber-music career alongside his orchestral role.
Widely regarded as one of the leading flautists of his generation, Pahud has built an extensive discography spanning Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and newly commissioned contemporary repertoire, earning multiple Diapason d’Or and Gramophone awards along the way. He is a sought-after chamber partner, regularly appearing with musicians including Renaud and Gautier Capuçon, Eric Le Sage, and Trevor Pinnock. His championing of new works has helped expand the modern flute repertoire, and he continues to teach and give masterclasses worldwide while maintaining his principal chair in Berlin.
