Magdalena Kožená was born on 26 May 1973 in Brno, Czechoslovakia. She originally trained as a pianist but shifted to vocal studies after a hand injury, studying at the Brno Conservatory and then the Bratislava Academy of Performing Arts, graduating in 1995, the same year she won the International Mozart Competition. After a brief engagement at the Vienna Volksoper, an acclaimed Bach aria recording secured her a Deutsche Grammophon contract that launched her international career.

Kožená has become one of the leading mezzo-sopranos of her generation, performing at the Théâtre du Châtelet, Vienna Festival, Edinburgh Festival, and the Metropolitan Opera, with an extensive discography spanning Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Mozart. She won the Gramophone Solo Vocal Award (2001), was named Gramophone Artist of the Year (2004), was made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2003), and received the Handel Prize (2013).
