Biography (read more)

Wilhelm Richard Wagner was a German composer, conductor, theatre director, and essayist who fundamentally reshaped operatic form in the 19th century, writing both the libretti and music for his stage works. His mature masterpieces include the four-opera cycle “Der Ring des Nibelungen,” “Tristan und Isolde,” “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg,” and “Parsifal.” Wagner pioneered the concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk (“total work of art”), unifying music, poetry, and stagecraft, and developed the extensive use of leitmotifs — recurring musical themes tied to characters and ideas. To realize his vision for the Ring, he built the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, which premiered the complete cycle in 1876.

Wagner’s harmonic innovations, especially the chromaticism of “Tristan und Isolde,” are widely regarded as a bridge to modernist and even atonal music, influencing composers from Bruckner and Mahler to Debussy and Schoenberg; his legacy is also permanently complicated by his antisemitic writings, whose relationship to his art remains a subject of ongoing scholarly and cultural debate.
