Ian Bostridge (born 25 December 1964 in London) is an English tenor celebrated as an opera and lieder singer. He came to music relatively late by professional standards, having first earned a doctorate in history from Oxford in 1990 and taught at Corpus Christi College before beginning professional singing at 27; he made his Wigmore Hall debut in 1993 and his acclaimed operatic debut in 1994 as Lysander in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
An EMI Classics (later Warner Classics) exclusive artist since 1996, Bostridge is a three-time Grammy winner and fifteen-time nominee, celebrated above all for his interpretations of Schubert’s song cycles and English and German lieder in long-standing partnerships with pianists including Julius Drake, Antonio Pappano and Thomas Adès. He was made a CBE in 2004 for services to music, and alongside his singing career he has written acclaimed books on music history, including the bestselling Schubert’s Winter Journey: Anatomy of an Obsession.
