Francesco Cavalli, born Pietro Francesco Caletti-Bruni (14 February 1602 – 14 January 1676), was a Venetian composer, organist and singer. He studied under Monteverdi and succeeded him as the leading opera composer of mid-17th-century Venice, writing more than thirty operas over his career.

His opera Giasone (1649) was the single most popular opera of the 17th century, and Cavalli’s prolific output effectively defined Venetian public opera in the decades after Monteverdi.
