Heitor Villa-Lobos (5 March 1887 – 17 November 1959) was a Brazilian composer, conductor, cellist, and classical guitarist, widely regarded as the single most significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he learned cello and guitar as a child and, after leaving home at 18, spent years travelling through Brazil’s interior absorbing folk and Afro-Brazilian musical traditions. He became a prolific composer, producing over 2,000 works across nearly every genre, including the Bachianas Brasileiras and Chôros series, which fuse Brazilian folk elements with the contrapuntal language of Bach and other European models. From the 1930s he also led major reforms of music education in Brazil, and his international reputation was boosted by figures such as pianist Artur Rubinstein and guitarist Andrés Segovia, for whom he wrote his celebrated 12 Études.
Villa-Lobos remains one of the most recognizable South American composers in music history. His 12 Études for guitar (1929), dedicated to Andrés Segovia, together with his 5 Preludes (1940), are considered cornerstone works of the modern classical guitar repertoire.
