Biography (read more)
Christina Pluhar was born in 1965 in Graz, Austria, and discovered her passion for early music while studying at the University of Graz. She went on to specialize in lute, theorbo, and Baroque guitar at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, and in 1992 won first prize at the Malmö Early Music Festival as a member of Ensemble La Fenice. Based in Paris since then, she has performed both as a soloist and as a continuo player in the Baroque music scene, and in 2000 she founded the early-music ensemble L’Arpeggiata, which she continues to direct from the theorbo and baroque harp.
Through L’Arpeggiata, Christina Pluhar has built one of the most distinctive and commercially successful projects in early music, known for combining historically informed Italian, French, and English 17th-century repertoire with instrumental improvisation and collaborations with jazz, flamenco, and traditional musicians. Her themed programs and recordings — including La Tarantella, Los Impossibles, and collaborations with singers such as Philippe Jaroussky and Nuria Rial — have won multiple awards and drawn new, wider audiences to Baroque vocal and instrumental music well beyond the traditional early-music circuit.
