John Danyel, also called John Daniel, was born in Wellow, Somerset. He was baptized on 6 November 1564. He was the younger brother of the poet Samuel Daniel. He was an English lute player and songwriter. He held some offices at court. He died around 1626.
His surviving works include “Coy Daphne Fled”, about the nymph Daphne and her fate, and “Like as the lute delights”. He was the author of Songs for the Lute, Viol and Voice (1606). Early copies of his compositions are held in the music collection of the Cambridge Digital Library. Scores of his works are also available from the International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP).
