Juan Leovigildo Brouwer Mezquida, known as Leo Brouwer, was born on 1 March 1939 in Havana, Cuba. He is a composer, conductor, and classical guitarist who studied guitar in Havana before continuing his musical education in the United States at the Juilliard School and Hartt College of Music. He has served as a leading figure in Cuban musical life, including as director of the Grupo de Experimentacion Sonora del ICAIC, and has had a long career composing for film, orchestra, and solo guitar. Brouwer is a Member of Honour of the International Music Council.

Brouwer is widely regarded as one of the most important living composers for classical guitar, blending Cuban and Afro-Cuban musical elements with avant-garde and minimalist techniques. His works, including “Un Dia de Noviembre” and numerous guitar concertos and etudes, are staples of the modern classical guitar repertoire.
