Miguel Llobet Soles was born on 18 October 1878 in Barcelona and died on 22 February 1938. He was a Spanish (Catalan) classical guitarist who toured extensively across Europe and America as a virtuoso performer. Trained first as a painter, he took up the guitar after receiving one as a gift from an uncle, and after hearing a recital by Antonio Jimenez Manjon in 1889 he sought instruction, eventually becoming the most celebrated pupil of the great guitar pedagogue Francisco Tarrega, whom he began studying with in Barcelona in 1894.

Llobet is renowned for his arrangements of Catalan folk songs and of Isaac Albeniz’s piano works for solo guitar, arrangements later popularized further by Andres Segovia. He also composed original works and helped establish the guitar transcription tradition that shaped twentieth-century classical guitar repertoire.
