Biography (read more)

Ferdinando Maria Meinrado Francesco Pascale Rosario Carulli was an Italian composer and guitarist, born 9 February 1770 in Naples and died 17 February 1841 in Paris. Largely self-taught on the guitar after early training on the cello, he developed his own systematic approach to the instrument and quickly built a reputation as a virtuoso performer and teacher. In 1808 he settled permanently in Paris, then a leading center of guitar culture, where he taught, performed, and published prolifically until his death.

Carulli was one of the most prolific guitarist-composers of the early 19th century, producing over 400 works including sonatas, duos, and concertos. His Méthode complète pour guitare ou lyre, Op. 27 (1810) became one of the most influential guitar methods of the era and remains in use by student guitarists today.
