Valentina Yevhenivna Lisitsa was born in 1973 in Kyiv (then Kiev), Ukrainian SSR, and began playing piano at age three, giving her first solo recital at four. She attended the Lysenko music school and the Kyiv Conservatory, studying under Ludmilla Tsvierko alongside her future husband, pianist Alexei Kuznetsoff; the pair won the 1991 Murray Dranoff Two Piano Competition in Miami and moved to the United States that year, making their New York debut at the Mostly Mozart Festival in 1995. Lisitsa posted her first YouTube video in 2007 and, largely bypassing the traditional promoter and label system, built an enormous following there, logging tens of millions of views by 2012 and over 200 million by 2020. She signed with Decca in 2012 ahead of her Royal Albert Hall debut, recorded the four Ives violin sonatas with Hilary Hahn for Deutsche Grammophon, and signed a three-year contract with the French label Naïve in 2021.
Lisitsa is widely credited as one of the first classical musicians to build a major international career primarily through self-released YouTube recordings rather than the conventional label and management pipeline, demonstrating a viable digital-first model that reshaped how emerging classical artists reach global audiences. Her online popularity subsequently converted into label recording contracts with Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, and Naïve, and performances at venues including Carnegie Hall, the Musikverein, and the Royal Albert Hall.
