Biography (read more)
Pēteris Vasks is a Latvian composer of the contemporary era, born in Aizpute and based in Latvia while maintaining an active international career. His output centers on orchestral works, concertos, string quartets, and choral and vocal music, marked by a shift from early aleatoric techniques toward a style incorporating Latvian folk elements, minimalist procedures, and often environmental themes, delivered in a clear, communicative harmonic idiom.
Vasks emerged as a major figure in European contemporary music in the 1990s, his profile boosted internationally after violinist Gidon Kremer began championing his works, and he is now regarded as one of the most influential and widely performed European composers of his generation. His honors include the Herder Prize (1996) and Cannes Classical Awards (2004), along with membership in several major European musical academies.
