Biography (read more)
Marc Lewon is a German musician, born in 1972, who works mainly in early music; his instruments are voice, lute, gittern, bowed fiddle and Renaissance viols. After two master’s degrees, in musicology and German literature, at the University of Heidelberg, he specialised in early-music performance at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. His teachers there included Crawford Young (lute), Randall Cook (bowed fiddle) and Kathleen Dineen (voice). He created the ensemble Leones in 2008. He is also a founding member of Dulce Melos (2004).
He combines musicological research and extensive concert experience, working on many projects that join practice and theory in medieval and Renaissance music. He edited the Lochamer Liederbuch in a new transcription with detailed commentary (three volumes: 2007, 2008, 2010). He wrote an article on Agricola and the lute, which appeared in English in the Quarterly of the Lute Society of America (2008). Recordings by his ensemble Leones include Colours in the Dark – The Instrumental Music of Alexander Agricola (2013).
