Biography (read more)
Francesco Spinacino was an Italian lutenist and composer, born in Fossombrone in the second half of the fifteenth century. He died after 1507, presumably in Venice. Spinacino’s works appeared in two of the four lute books Intabulatura de Lauto published by Ottaviano dei Petrucci — the first printed lute tablatures.
They contain 27 ricercars, two basse danses, and 52 lute arrangements. In an arrangement for two lutes of Johannes Ghiselin’s Joli Amours, the term “Recercare” is used for the first time. His ricercars are elaborate for their time and freely structured, with virtuosic and imitative passages often alternating.
