Tilman Hoppstock (born 1961) is a German classical guitarist, cellist, and musicologist. He studied guitar and cello in Darmstadt and Cologne, began his concert career in 1978, and has since performed in around 40 countries. He teaches international guitar classes at the Akademie für Tonkunst in Darmstadt and has given masterclasses and lectures at institutions including the Royal Academy of Music in London, the Manhattan School of Music in New York, and the University of Southern California. In 2014 he completed a doctorate on the polyphony of Bach’s lute fugues, and in 2013 he received the Darmstadt Music Award for his lifetime work as guitarist, teacher, musicologist, and publisher.

Hoppstock is best known among guitarists for his scholarly and practical work on J. S. Bach, including the two-volume study Bach’s Lute Works from the Guitarist’s Perspective and a widely used series of Bach transcriptions for guitar informed by his research into the composer’s counterpoint. His transcriptions of Bach’s violin and cello works, including the solo violin partitas, have become a standard part of the repertoire studied and performed by classical guitarists.
