Renaud Capuçon was born in 1976 and began violin studies at age four at the Chambéry Conservatoire before entering the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris at fourteen, studying under Gérard Poulet and Veda Reynolds, where he won first prizes in violin and chamber music. He served as first violin of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra under Claudio Abbado and later taught at the Royal Northern College of Music.

Capuçon was named ‘talent of the year’ by the Victoires de la musique classique in 2000 and ‘instrumental soloist of the year’ in 2005, and received the Georges Enescu violin prize in 2006. He is a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur and the National Order of Merit, and has built an extensive discography and chamber-music partnership with artists including Martha Argerich, Emmanuel Pahud, and his brother, cellist Gautier Capuçon.
