Giovanni “Nino” Rota Rinaldi (1911–1979) was an Italian composer, pianist, conductor and academic, best known for his film scores for directors including Federico Fellini, Luchino Visconti and Franco Zeffirelli, and for the first two installments of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather trilogy, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Original Score (1974).

Rota’s love theme from Zeffirelli’s 1968 film Romeo and Juliet, popularized as the song “A Time for Us,” became one of the most recognizable film melodies of the 20th century and has been arranged for countless instrumental combinations, including guitar duo.
