Biography (read more)
Niccolò Jommelli was an Italian composer of the late Baroque and early Classical periods, born near Naples and trained there before working in Venice, Rome, and, from 1753 to 1768, at the Württemberg court in Stuttgart as Kapellmeister to Duke Karl Eugen. He returned to Naples for the final years of his life. His output centers on opera, with roughly sixty opere serie, alongside oratorios, masses, psalms, cantatas, and instrumental works. He died in Naples in 1774.
Jommelli was an important operatic reformer whose innovations, including richer orchestral accompaniment, accompanied recitative, reduced vocal ornamentation, and the introduction of ballet into opera seria, are sometimes ranked alongside the reforms later associated with Gluck. Though overshadowed in historical memory by more famous contemporaries, he is recognized by scholars as a key transitional figure between Baroque and Classical operatic practice, and his works continue to be studied and occasionally performed and recorded.
