Francesco Cilea was an Italian composer of the late Romantic and verismo periods, born in Palmi and trained at the Naples Conservatory. He worked as a conductor and educator in Florence, Milan, and Palermo before eventually settling in Varazze, Liguria. His output centers on opera, most notably Adriana Lecouvreur (1902) and L’arlesiana (1897), alongside a small body of chamber, orchestral, and vocal works. He died in Varazze in 1950 at the age of 84.

Cilea occupies a modest but durable place in the Italian verismo tradition, his lyrical, Neapolitan-inflected melodic style tinged with French harmonic color setting his work apart from contemporaries such as Puccini and Mascagni. Of his output, only Adriana Lecouvreur has held a firm place in the international repertoire, prized above all for its title role’s showcase arias for soprano.
