Federico Moreno Torroba was born on 3 March 1891 and died on 12 September 1982. He was a Spanish composer, conductor, and theatrical impresario, especially remembered for his contributions to the classical guitar repertoire and considered one of the leading twentieth-century composers for the instrument. He was also one of the foremost composers of zarzuela, the Spanish light-opera form, with his 1932 zarzuela “Luisa Fernanda” proving enduringly popular. He additionally composed ballets, symphonic works, piano pieces, and operas, including “El poeta” (1980), which starred tenor Placido Domingo, and he ran his own touring zarzuela company.

Torroba’s guitar works, written in close collaboration with performers such as Andres Segovia, helped establish the twentieth-century Spanish guitar repertoire and remain widely performed concert staples, including his frequently recorded “Sonatina”.
