Edson Lopes, born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1957, graduated in 1978 from the Conservatory of Musical and Dramatic Arts “Dr. Carlos de Campos” in Tatuí. In 1979 he studied at the “Música en Compostela” course in Spain under José Tomás, then assistant to Andrés Segovia, receiving the course’s “Most Exceptional Student” award. In 2003 he earned the Licentiate in Guitar Performance from Trinity College London.
Lopes won first prize in every competition he entered early in his career, including the Young Instrumentalists Competition sponsored by Rede Globo and the 1st National Guitar Competition sponsored by Banco do Brasil, and was praised by Argentine guitarist Maria Luisa Anido for his technical assurance and refined tone. As a member of the Brazilian Guitar Quartet he toured extensively across the United States and appeared at the Hong Kong Arts Festival and international guitar festivals in Monterrey and Aarhus.
