Biography (read more)
Carlos Guastavino (1912–2000) was an Argentine composer born in Santa Fe Province. He studied music locally with Esperanza Lothringer and Dominga Iaffei, and later in Buenos Aires with Athos Palma. A skilled pianist, he performed his own works in London between 1947 and 1949 at the invitation of the BBC, which also premiered the orchestral version of his Tres Romances Argentinos. In 1956 he toured the USSR and China performing his vocal and piano music.
Guastavino wrote over 500 works, the majority songs for voice and piano, in a conservative, tonal, lushly romantic style deeply rooted in Argentine folk idiom. His reputation, built largely on his songs, earned him the nickname “the Schubert of the Pampas”; several of his instrumental works, including guitar sonatas, have entered the classical guitar repertoire.
