Life
Anthony Bailes was born on 18 June 1947 and is a British lutenist. He began on classical guitar before meeting Diana Poulton and taking up the lute with her, later winning an Arts Council of Great Britain grant in 1971 to study with Eugen Müller-Dombois at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel. He has performed widely as a soloist, recording French repertoire by the Gaultiers, Mouton, and Gallot as well as lute music of the Netherlands, and has collaborated with musicians including Jordi Savall, Nigel Rogers, Emma Kirkby, and James Bowman. He also published articles on lute performance practice and taught for many years at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam.
Impact
Anthony Bailes has been an important interpreter and scholar of the seventeenth-century French lute school, bringing the intricate style brisé of Denis and Ennemond Gaultier, Mouton, and Gallot to wider audiences through recordings and published research on performance practice. His long tenure teaching at the Sweelinck Conservatory helped train Dutch and international lutenists.
