Albert de Rippe, also known as Alberto da Ripa da Mantova, was an Italian lutenist and composer born in Mantua around 1500. He worked there before leaving for France in 1528, and joined the court of Francis I in 1529. At court he was held in great esteem, with an annual salary double that of any other lutenist and frequent gifts of land, money, and wine. Francis I also granted him a letter of naturalization, guaranteeing his descendants an inheritance. He died in 1551.
Three of his works were published in his lifetime; six volumes appeared posthumously, published by his pupil Guillaume de Morlaye as tab[u]lature de leut. His oeuvre comprises 26 fantasias, 59 intabulations of chansons, motets, and madrigals, and 10 dances for six-course lute, plus two fantasias for four-course guitar. The lute fantasias are now considered his most important works. Their dense polyphony and complex architecture make them some of the most important works in the repertoire.
