Nobuyuki Tsujii was born blind in 1988 due to microphthalmia and began formal piano study at age four, learning music entirely by ear from specially recorded practice tracks. He graduated from Ueno Gakuen University in 2011, and in 2009 he tied for the gold medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, making his Carnegie Hall debut in 2011.
Tsujii has performed with major orchestras worldwide and made his BBC Proms debut in 2013, and in 2024 he signed an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon. He also won the Japan Film Critics Award in 2011 for film composition, and he is widely recognized both for his artistry and his extensive charitable performances supporting disaster relief and disability communities.
