Biography (read more)

Édouard Lalo was a French composer of the Romantic period, born in Lille and based in Paris from his teenage years, where he studied at the Conservatoire and worked as a string player and teacher before turning increasingly to composition in mid-career. His output centers on orchestral and chamber works with a particular focus on the violin and cello, most notably the Symphonie espagnole for violin and orchestra, alongside a cello concerto, symphonies, and the opera Le Roi d’Ys. He died in Paris in 1892 at the age of 69.

Lalo is remembered chiefly for the Symphonie espagnole, which remains a staple of the violin concerto repertoire and helped popularize Spanish-inflected color in French orchestral music. Praised for combining strong melodic invention and vivid orchestration with a structural solidity often likened to German models, he stands as a distinctive figure among nineteenth-century French composers, and his music continues to be performed, recorded, and referenced in later works.
